I'm sure you've had problems like this before, you've just got off work and you are hungry. You're tired and you are hungry. So what do you do, well in Borneo there's no shortage of food outlets. There's everything from restaurants to hawker style food and then we have the small cozy and comfortable eateries. you just have to know where to go. I'm not a picky eater but I do like places that I'm familiar with and so I decided to go to this one place I knew.
I decided once again to go to a familiar place, it's not one of my usual haunts but the food there is good. The place I chose is known for their delicious Hainanese Chicken Rice which is just great. But what a lot of people don't realize is that they also have some other wonderful surprising dishes as well. Well that night I ordered something I have not had in a long long time. This is what I ordered.
This my friend is Hainanese Pork Curry Rice. Now before you go all Ohh it looks too oily. From the looks of it, you would think that but it's not really that oily. In fact it's not as oily as you would think. It comes with a healthy serving of bean curd strips (very yummy) potatoes and long beans and of course pork all in a hot simmering soup of spicy curry, all full of flavour and taste. It is spicy yes but it doesn't scorch your lips, it maybe a little strong for some but I feel that it's just right. The portions are very generous and what I like best is that it's always steaming hot when served.
You get to enjoy this wonderful bowl of goodness with some rice and a bowl of soup. I chose to have some fresh chrysanthemum tea that night. Which was refreshing, not too sweet, just nice.
And that was the first piece I scooped out from that bowl of deliciousness. This is a must for fans of spicy dishes. After the first bite you'll want more. The curry is delicious. I wanted to take more pictures but I couldn't stop myself from finishing every off the plate. The potatoes were cooked to perfection, the same thing with the pork and long beans and the strips of bean curd. It was a great meal.
I was also told that this restaurant also serves a delicious Hainanese pork chop, a generous pork chop patty with tomatoes, potatoes all drenched in a delicious sauce that is just beyond description.
Oh the place is called Little Hainan. Hence the Hainanese dishes. The place has a nice and comfy ambiance. It feels and looks like an old fashioned cafe style restaurant. This is the work of a husband and wife team, Lynda and Julian, who can fill you in on the history of the Hainanese in Sarawak; at the same time as they whet your appetite. If you're the type to try a little bit of everything, then you're in for a treat, they have a lot to choose from, even authentic Hainanese Butter Coffee, gotta try that one day.
So if you're ever in Borneo, drop by a little place called Little Hainan, this is the address, Lorong Permata 3, Kuching Ground Floor, SL6, Lot 3023, Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Road Kuching, Sarawak.
For some reason, I am really hungry right now. Thank you for dropping by, if you have any comments or maybe questions, just leave them here and I'll see you again next time with another Borneo Broadcast.
